Different Apple MFI Lightning Connector Chips: C48/C89/C91/C94/C100/C101
Lightning connector is a unique interface for iPhone. Many Apple accessories use lightning connectors, such as lightning charging cables and audio cables. Different from other USB cables, there is a chip in the MFI-certified lightning cable to identify Apple devices. So far Apple lightning chips include: C48, C89, C91, C94, C100, C101 chip. C48 Lightning Connector Chip
C48 chip is used for USB A to Lightning cable, it is old version lightning connector chip. In order to improve security, Apple stop to supply C48 chip since February 2019. But this is still a certified chip, it is still applicable to any iPhone and iOS now.
C89 Lightning Connector Chip
C89 lightning chip is used on USB to lightning cable which is used instead of the old C48 lightning connector chip. The new Lightning connectors C89 are designed with a high level confidentiality of information. According to MFi certification program, “Apple requests every accessory that integrates a Lightning C89 must pass the following tests on the factory line: over voltage protection test, current limit test, and quiescent current consumption test.” Therefore, this requirement will drive to construct an even more secure Lightning cable with a higher cost than the current one.
C48 Vs C89 Chip Connectors
- C89 Chip terminal is more durable and stable than original C48.
- 8 pins color of C48 port is gold (gold-plated copper), while C89 is silver (rhodium and ruthenium-plated Copper).
C94 Lightning Connector Chip
C94 lightning connector chip is used on USB C to Lightning cable which supports 18W or higher PD fast Charging.
The C94 lightning connector looks the same as the C89 lightning connector, and their price is also the same.
C91 Lightning Connector Chip
C91 lightning connector chip is the same as C94, but C91 lightning connector chip was used on Apple original cable, C94 lightning connector is used on third parties of MFI manufacturer, however, now latest USB C to Lightning cable from Apple also use C94 Chip.
C100 Lightning Connector Chip
C100 lightning connector is used on Earpods with Lightning Connector.
C101 Lightning Connector Chip
The C101 lightning connector is used Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter. C101 looks the same as the C100 lightning connector, but the price for C101 is higher.
